As we wake up to frosty mornings and experience shorter days and inclement weather, it’s important to get your farm or garden prepared for winter to ensure it’s in the best condition ready for spring. Here are our top three products to see you through the winter months.

Frost protection fleece

The Mesh4 frost protection fleece can be used to protect your crops from frost, wind, hail, birds and insects. It will also diffuse strong sunlight, reduce transpiration and is permeable to air and water.

Mole net

Our mole net effectively protects your lawn from moles and small rodents which can dig holes in the ground. The mesh is light, but heavy-duty like a metal net. However, unlike the latter, it resists chemicals and weather elements. The net goes through a stretching process where it’s pulled in both directions during production, which provides the mesh with exceptional tensile strength so it can withstand intense stresses.

Windbreak

We provide the best windbreak fence, whether you’re looking for heavy duty windbreak netting,  garden windbreak mesh or agricultural windbreak netting, we have the perfect products for you.
Our 1m windbreak is designed to reduce windspeed without creating turbulence, and provides cost effective protection where no natural shelter exists.

Our high strength windbreak is ideal for particularly exposed areas, in addition to closer post spacing. It has been designed with high tensile strength properties to withstand any stronger winds.

You can buy ground and grass reinforcement products online here.

It seems that now is the time to concentrate on your garden and get it looking beautiful. We’re all going to be spending much more time in our gardens in these unprecedented times, due to the Coronavirus pandemic; to get some fresh air and for our mental wellbeing. With some hardware stores still open and online/telephone ordering still available, you can still get products required to get your garden beautiful.

Here’s Mesh4’s ideas:

Simply remove that clutter! Everyone has old clutter and mess in their gardens, from a cracked plant pot and rusty old tools, to kids’ toys. Make a decision to remove anything damaged and anything which has been unused within the past 3-6 months.

Out with old in with the new! Remove any dying, tired old plants. Removing these limp plants will reinvent your garden instantly. You can then buy some new healthy plants and flowers to replace them – you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

Add some decorative items to your garden which could include ornaments, planters and flower pots. There’s an array of these to choose from; all different shapes, sizes and colours; there will be one to suit your personality! You could also add some natural screening or artificial hedging, both provide a quick and easy way of hiding unsightly objects and transforming any existing fence systems. Always thought about disguising those ugly wheelie bins? You can with our natural wheelie bin screen, available in 3 different sizes and hinged for easy access. Or why not add some pretty fairy lights to different areas of your garden or the patio area? The ideas are endless!

Prevent unsightly muddy areas due to foot traffic with our grass protection mesh and plastic pavers, these products act as a barrier providing the grass roots with protection, helping the grass become stronger and healthier. You’ll be well on your way to the green luscious grass you have always wanted and those muddy areas will soon be long gone!

No garden is beautiful when covered in mole hills! Order yourself some mole net, this net provides a barrier between the surface of the grass and the underground and stops the moles from digging up and what’s better, it won’t harm any animals. Please note the area will need to be prepped first.

When you think about it, there are many ways, and products you can buy, to make your garden beautiful. We hope our suggestions have helped.

The sun has started to make an appearance and the temperature is starting to feel that bit warmer; of course, all those chocolate Easter eggs are in the shops which means Spring is just round the corner! Now is the time to prepare your garden ready for Spring – here’s Mesh4’s ideas on how this can be done.

Our Ground Cover offers great protection against weeds
  1. Have a Spring clean!  – Gardens can be neglected throughout Autumn and Winter so they will need a good tidy up. Firstly, prune any hedges, bushes and trees; trimming back and cutting any dead growth. Secondly, remove any leaves, dead and unhealthy plants and other debris such as the hedge/tree clippings from flower beds and borders. Give the lawns a good mow – trimming that grass down will completely transform the garden!
  2. Dig out those weeds and dead plants – Give compacted soil a good turn and mix using a garden trowel or fork to prepare for planting new plants and flowers. Dig out any weeds; make sure you get those roots! And either burn them or put them in the garden waste bin. To prevent weeds in the future you can use our weed control fabric or ground cover. If you plan on using a fabric weed suppressant, lay this first before thinking of planting any new plants and flowers.
  3. Liven up those fences – There are many suitable paints in a variety of colours in your local DIY shops to give your fences a lease of life! Not only do they modernise your garden but adding a lick of paint will protect your fence from the elements. For a more natural appearance, you can use Mesh4’s artificial hedging, they are supplied in rolls so easy to install with ties, wire or metal staples. Simply roll out and fix to the original fence. They don’t require any maintenance and can easily be washed with water. Fancy having plants climbing up your fences? Use our square mesh 50, an ideal support for climbing flowers and an inexpensive alternative to traditional trellises.
  4. Prepare the patio – Over the Autumn and Winter months dirt and grime can build up on patios and decking. Give it a good clean with a power hose or scrub with a thick bristled brush. Keep your bins in your garden? Disguise them with our wheelie bin screen, an attractive rattan wheelie bin storage screen, easy to install and access with a hinged middle, which will really spruce up your garden!
Our Rattan Wheelie Bin Screen helps make your garden beautiful

These 4 steps will completely change the look of your garden to get it Spring ready. Take a browse through our previous blogs for more tips and advice.

The UK isn’t blessed with the best of weather! For the past month or two all I hear is the howling of the wind. With two recent weather warnings and storm Ciara and storm Dennis bringing strong gale force winds, who knows when this spell of windy weather will end!

Farmers especially suffer from the negative effects of the wind which can cause severe disruption and losses. Farming is a livelihood; it needs to be successful to gain profit and make a living so farmers need to ensure their crops and livestock are protected.

Crops and plants won’t survive well in poor weather conditions – wind has a huge negative effect on their growth; wind can damage or blow down the strongest tree, so in strong winds seedlings won’t stand a chance and mature crop such as corn will break and flatten. Wind mixed with colder winter temperatures or hot humid summer temperatures dries the crops out, making it difficult for them to replace the water they lose, which will result in them dying. Plants and crops are more susceptible to disease when damaged, so this damage needs to be prevented.

Farm animals also suffer from negative effects of the wind. All animals have a thermo neutral zone; a temperature that is considered the best for animal performance and health. The lower mark of this zone is referred to as the lower critical temperature and livestock experience cold stress below this. The wind produces wind chill and if not protected from this the animals will soon move to the lower critical temperature. This in turn increases energy requirements which will use fat stores, causing weight loss and increasing feed costs. It can also cause hypothermia which can be deadly, causing profit loss through death and health expenses.

In cases where there are no natural windbreaks, artificial wind barriers can be created and Mesh4 have products which are suitable to prevent wind damage on your farm:

pba45162n1.tff

Shade and Shelter Net

Ideal for smaller, more sheltered areas and poly tunnels, our shade and shelter nets are manufactured from HDPE. This shelter net has reinforced edges with eyelets and is UV stabilised. These cost-effective nets are permeable to light, air and water but provide shelter from winds. Aesthetically pleasing colour and material which will blend in perfectly with natural surroundings.

Windbreaks

There are three choices of windbreaks, they are all UV stabilised and have reinforced edges but have varying weights and tensile strength. The strongest one; our ‘super strength’ windbreak has a tensile strength of 30 KN/m making it one of the strongest on the market. This wind barrier provides suitable protection from gale force winds and exposed windy areas. It also makes a brilliant windbreak to put around animal housing for a side air vent solution, it is used regularly for this application and has proved very effective. Livestock need to be protected from the wind but they also need some sort of ventilation to prevent moisture build up and disease and these windbreaks are ideal.

Grass in our gardens puts up with a lot. From kids playing out, to dogs running around; trips back and forth to the shed; lawns can be pretty resilient but they can also fail to thrive with the constant use and trampling. Everybody wants the ‘best’ green luscious lawn, but sometimes that can be hard to achieve; once the grass is damaged it can take years to fix any issues.

Mesh4 have come up with 4 easy ways to stop and prevent grass from becoming ruined:

  1. Flood damaged lawn: Grass doesn’t grow well in exceptionally wet areas; it doesn’t take long for oxygen levels to decline and roots start to die. To help control boggy areas, Mesh4’s porous pavers can be laid. Firstly, a subbase needs to be prepared which contains DOT Type 3, sand, soil and angular stone. This subbase and the paver’s cellular structure allows rain water to drain freely, preventing surface water. The improved drainage and water being able to permeate to the surface will provide the grass roots with enough (but not too much) water and nutrients they need to thrive, leading to a full green lawn! Our plastic paving is also eco-friendly as its manufactured from 100% recycled material.
  2. Don’t mow when wet: Mowing wet grass results in a tear rather than a clean cut. These tears create a perfect environment for fungal infestations and fungal infestations, resulting in brown and thinning patches. Furthermore, mowing the lawn when wet isn’t great for the soil – the wheels will form ruts and cause soil to become compacted over time, which can eventually cause poor drainage.
  3. Prevent a dog destroyed lawn: Dogs can easily turn your garden into a mess – rough play, digging and your dog expelling all its energy running around can easily damage the grass, leaving it with bare patches, muddy areas and ruts. Using a grass reinforcement mesh like our TR FLEX provides a barrier between your lawn and the dog’s destructive paws! This strong green plastic garden mesh is easily laid and ensures effective anchoring of the grass roots, making them strong and encouraging re-growth.
  4. Don’t over fertilise: A pale yellow, thinning lawn means it’s hungry and needs food. You can apply fertiliser which will provide it with the extra nutrients it needs. However, fertiliser when used incorrectly can do more harm than good – applying too much and unevenly can result in chemical burn, which will kill your lawn! When buying fertiliser make sure you read the instructions carefully and do as much research as you can to prevent this issue.

We hope you have found this small blog informative. For any further information, samples and a competitive quote please contact us here.

Windbreaks (also known as wind fences) are typically used to reduce wind speeds in open or exposed areas, such as fields, industrial areas or homes. As experienced with Storm Dennis & Ciara, high winds can cause major disruption and damage; a high strength windbreak is the best solution for protecting against the wind.

How to stop your fence from blowing down in the wind

Mesh4 windbreaks provide the best windbreak fence. Whether you’re looking for heavy duty windbreak netting, garden windbreak mesh or agricultural windbreak netting, we have the perfect large windbreakers for you.

Super strength windbreak

1m Windbreak

Designed to reduce windspeed without creating turbulence, Mesh4 windbreak provides cost effective protection where no natural shelter exists.

High Strength Windbreak

In particularly exposed areas it is advisable to install a more robust windbreak in addition to closer post spacing. High strength windbreak has been designed with high tensile strength properties to withstand stronger winds.

How to protect against strong winds

Super strength windbreak

With a tensile strength of 30kN/m this windbreak is one of the strongest available and will provide protection against gale force winds. Manufactured in 1m widths, it can be erected in successive layers for a high level windbreak.

Triplet Windbreak

Triplet windbreak has a unique style with regards to its decorative effect and its original structure. It mitigates the effect of the wind on balconies and terraces while keeping its decorative function.

Mesh 4’s Gridlok Elite are strong interlocking 100% recycled plastic ground reinforcement grids which can be installed to provide an attractive reinforced grass or gravel surface suitable for driving and parking on and for pedestrian use.

These paving grids are SUDS compliant and do not require any planning permission. Due to their cell structure these permeable pavers allow water to drain freely making an ideal environment for grass growth and an ideal solution to a surface where water run-off is an issue. They also benefit from having a ‘ground spike’ which helps resist any movement when in use.

A sub-base does need to be prepared before installation of our paving grid system, please read the installation instructions here. When having a grass finish the plastic grids protect each blade of grass at the root and only the grass blades themselves are exposed which increases the structural integrity of the grass and helps with grass growth, bald patches and erosion. The cellular structure also prevents any soil and flowers from being washed away as they stay contained in the pavers. When having a gravel finish the cells ensure the gravel is contained tightly preventing gravel displacement and bare empty patches.

Gridlok filled with Gravel

These gravel pavers/grass pavers can withstand constant pedestrian and vehicular traffic of up to 40 tonnes per m2 and are ideal to be used for the following applications:

  • Grass/gravel car parks
  • Grass or gravel driveways
  • Emergency access routes
  • Helicopter landing pad
  • Shed bases
  • Pedestrian and cycle paths
  • Golf buggy paths
  • Wheelchair access

Our plastic driveway grids are chemically inert, rot resistant and UV/weather resilient so will withstand years of use. They are light, quick and easy to install and will not crack (subject to the 40 tonnes per m2 limit) therefore a great cheap effective way of stabilising ground, encouraging grass growth and making an aesthetically pleasing and easy to manage path, walkway or driveway.

Fleece is one of the most useful accessories in the gardening and horticultural world! It can be used throughout the year and has many advantages.

Protection fleece helps raise temperatures, in the Spring and Summer it works with the warmth of the sun to raise temperatures inside the cover by a few degrees, this can speed up the maturity and flowering by 2 weeks compared to uncovered plants. Fleece at the same time is also able to let warmth out if it gets too hot in peak Summer.

In the Autumn and Winter fleece is used to insulate plants and crops from the cold weather and to protect them from frost. Covering sensitive plants throughout the whole of winter means they should survive until Spring. Frost protection fleece also protects from bad weather such as wind and hail preventing crops and plants from any damage and growth issues, wind along with low temperature is one of the main reasons plants growth is hindered.

It can also protect from pests and disease, offering a physical barrier to protect plants and crops from these destroying issues.

Our fleece comes in 17 gram and 30 gram and is manufactured from stabilised polypropylene, this lightweight fabric is soft and warm and is easy to install, however due to its lightness does need to be anchored down well.
