The post Products to help with social distancing at schools appeared first on Mesh4.
]]>Government guidance around social distancing presents key challenges for schools, particularly regarding drop-off and pickup. An influx of vehicles and people means a certain level of meandering and organised chaos.
Temporary car parks for improved social distancing
A number of schools have contacted us recently to enquire about our ground reinforcement products, which enable temporary carparks to be created. This way you can really utilise the space at your school without damaging the grass (not only is this unsightly and sure to upset the neighbours, it is also unsafe, in terms of slips and trips).

Temporary pedestrian walkways help to create more space
Temporary walkways help to again protect the grass but additionally control the flow of people and drive them down a certain route, ensuring there isn’t a flood of people approaching the school from all different angles (which is impossible to manage).

This is in line with our temporary carpark solutions mean that you can do a lot more to help your school comply with social distancing measures. If you’re back open and experiencing a certain level of concern or chaos, please don’t hesitate to contact us now.

]]>Mesh4’s main ground protection products suitable for schools are TR-Flex turf reinforcement mesh and GP-Flex grass protection mesh.

The TR-Flex ground reinforcement is a lightweight and flexible mesh that can be used for many grass-based applications:
This type of reinforcement is perfect for pathways in a school which may cut across grass. The mesh allows the ground to stay stable and not rot/erode away with the amount of people walking over it, whilst still allowing the grass to grow.

GP Flex is a ground/grass protection mesh, which provides grass matting protection for areas such as:
This type of reinforcement is best for school carparks. This will stop the ground form rotting/eroding beneath the surface. This mesh also allows extra grip, for example if the school needed to make a temporary carpark on the school field for school events. If the ground was wet, the mesh would allow for extra grip and will not ruin the grass.
Both types of mesh reinforcement use a series of fixing pins to hold them in place.
The TR-Flex and GP-Flex are both suited perfectly for schools whether it is protecting a grass path or used for an overflow carpark. Also, both reinforcements can be used either permanently or temporarily depending on the school’s needs.

Add some decorative items to your garden which could include ornaments, planters and flower pots. There’s an array of these to choose from; all different shapes, sizes and colours; there will be one to suit your personality! You could also add some natural screening or artificial hedging, both provide a quick and easy way of hiding unsightly objects and transforming any existing fence systems. Always thought about disguising those ugly wheelie bins? You can with our natural wheelie bin screen, available in 3 different sizes and hinged for easy access. Or why not add some pretty fairy lights to different areas of your garden or the patio area? The ideas are endless!
Prevent unsightly muddy areas due to foot traffic with our grass protection mesh and plastic pavers, these products act as a barrier providing the grass roots with protection, helping the grass become stronger and healthier. You’ll be well on your way to the green luscious grass you have always wanted and those muddy areas will soon be long gone!

No garden is beautiful when covered in mole hills! Order yourself some mole net, this net provides a barrier between the surface of the grass and the underground and stops the moles from digging up and what’s better, it won’t harm any animals. Please note the area will need to be prepped first.

]]>The post How to stop vehicles from slipping on grass appeared first on Mesh4.
]]>The issue with parking on grass is that it’s not designed to be trafficked by vehicles. Car tyres wear grass easily and quickly which causes worn and bald areas, making the ground extremely slippy and a complete nightmare to manoeuvre and park on. Tyres have no traction on a slippy muddy surface and will just spin and skid until you’re completely stuck in the mud! The last thing you want when holding an event or designing a grassed car parking area is a complete muddy mess, with cars unable to get on and off the area.
To fix this issue, paving, tarmac and concrete can be laid, however, these options can be very expensive, especially when needing to cover a bigger area and will require maintenance due to wear and tear.
Mesh4 has the best solution! Cost effective, no-maintenance products which provide traction and a protective barrier between car tyres and the ground. Here’s a little bit more about the suitable products:
Grass Parking Mesh

Our grass parking mesh is ideal for covering larger areas where the ‘green’ appearance is still required. With little preparation required, by cutting the grass as short as possible and levelling any ground by filling dips with a sand/soil mix, the mesh can then be laid with the brown anti-slip coating facing upwards. U pins are used to anchor the grass parking mesh down. Read more on our installation instructions here.
As the grass grows through the mesh, it forms a strong interlock and creates a barrier between car tyres and the ground, meaning the car tyres will not cause any disruption to the soil underneath and wear down the grass. This provides traction and stability to the surface which in turn will prevent slippage.
Available in three grades and four sizes there’s a grass mesh to suit your application.
Plastic Pavers

Our porous plastic grass pavers are an interlocking paving system ideal for areas with poor drainage issues. Due to their cellular structure these permeable pavers allow water to drain easily. With a thickness of 39mm they add depth between the soil surface which will easily protect the ground below when trafficked, preventing worn grass and muddy areas, making it an ideal solution.
The plastic pavers can either be seeded for a grass finish or gravelled. When seeded the cells provide unrestricted root growth and protection which provides an optimum environment for the grass; grass should be as healthy as ever! When gravelled the cellular structure contains the gravel preventing displacement, making it ideal for a driveway where you don’t have to constantly be brushing the gravel back into place!
A sub-base is required for this product – read more on our installation instructions here.
Contact Mesh4 today for further information on these products, we also supply small samples, expert advice and site visits if required.

]]>The BBC was about to film ‘Antiques Roadshow’, so full use of the off-road parking would be required for the film crew and visitors. Staff at Erddig quipped that visitor numbers would be bolstered following not only during, but after filming of the hit show, meaning even more vehicular and pedestrian traffic to the site.
In total, 105 reels of our medium duty grass reinforcement mesh were used, which equated to 4200 square metres. This was quickly installed by a small army of staff in the days before the event. By using the GP Flex grass reinforcement on the field for additional parking, it stopped the grassed area from turning into a quagmire and provided a suitable non-slip surface, thanks to its unique anti-slip coating and as an extra bonus, no planning permission was required!
Below are some pictures taken from the site:

]]>The post Ground reinforcement & protection: 6 top tips to protect grass & turf appeared first on Mesh4.
]]>Tip 1: Seeding your garden
To fill in any bare or thinning patches due to wear and tear and excess footfall traffic, it’s best to apply a generous amount of seed to rejuvenate the grass. Don’t forget to water often to encourage growth. Our turf reinforcement mesh can also help with this process; simply lay the green plastic mesh down onto your existing grass and pin with our U pins – the three dimensional structure of this grass mesh ensures effective anchoring of the grass roots, therefore this extra layer of protection can increase the stability and strength of the grass. With this turf reinforcement, you’ll reduce these bare and thinning grass patches and help the grass grow.
Tip 2: Aerate your lawn
Over time, the soil beneath the grass can become compacted, this compaction results in problems with air circulation, water drainage and nutrient absorption. By simply punching 3 inch deep holes around your garden, the soil will become looser which will help to prevent these issues. Aerating your lawn will make your grass greener and healthier as the grass will have a better environment in which to grow, with the nutrients and the amount of water it needs. For a more permanent solution, our porous pavers can be installed. Permeable pavers protect the soil underneath and due to their cellular structure, help with drainage issues as the water can flow freely. They also have the added benefit of increasing grass growth as they protect the roots with only the grass blades exposed. A sub-base does need to be prepared prior to installing our grass pavers, but they do not require any planning permission which is a great help.
Tip 3: Recycle your grass clippings
Probably one of the quickest and easiest methods to help improve your grass; instead of throwing away your grass clippings simply leave them on your lawn! These grass clippings will decompose and return much needed nutrients back into the soil which will improve the soil’s quality and reduce the need for fertilisers.
Tip 4: Safely prevent mole hills
Everyone dreams of a green beautiful garden and mole hills are the last thing anyone wants to see popping up! They can damage your garden and look awful. Our mole netting is a great option to prevent these moles, yet is a very safe way and will not harm the animals. This lightweight heavy duty mole mesh is laid underground a few centimetres below the surface which prevents the moles from accessing the area and digging up into the surface, leaving your garden mole hill free.
Tip 5: Prevent muddy areas
Excess mud can cause a negative effect on grass growth; the seeds can move around and make a very patchy lawn. Excess water can also hinder grass growth and kill the grass. It takes a lot of time and effort to correct a muddy lawn and turn it into the green garden you want! Laying our grass protection mesh can help. By pinning it down onto the ground or grass it can contain the mud underneath the grass mesh and protect the soil underneath/the grass roots from wear and tear due to foot traffic. It’s the perfect way to prevent the area from becoming even muddier and can help the grass to establish itself and start to grow.
Tip 6: Prevent weeds
Weeds can take over your garden quickly. They look unattractive and compete with grasses and flowers for nutrients, sun light, water and space, this then leaves the grass and flowers weak and unhealthy and can cause them to wilt and die. Weeds can be removed at the root either using tools or chemicals but this can be a repetitive, tiring job. Our ground cover can be used as a more permanent solution without having to repeatedly remove weeds manually. The area firstly needs to be prepared by removing any existing weeds and raking the area to make it smooth and free from debris. Mesh4’s weed mat can then be laid, covering the entire area. It is held down by ground cover pegs; holes can be cut around existing flowers or plants. The ground cover blocks any light, leaving the weeds unable to grow but is permeable enough to let water and essential nutrients get to the soil. You’re left with happy and healthy plants, and no more unsightly weeds.
We hope you’ve found our guide to ground reinforcement and protection helpful. See some of our recommended grass and ground protection meshes below.

]]>The post Plastic Pavers appeared first on Mesh4.
]]>These paving grids are SUDS compliant and do not require any planning permission. Due to their cell structure these permeable pavers allow water to drain freely making an ideal environment for grass growth and an ideal solution to a surface where water run-off is an issue. They also benefit from having a ‘ground spike’ which helps resist any movement when in use.
A sub-base does need to be prepared before installation of our paving grid system, please read the installation instructions here. When having a grass finish the plastic grids protect each blade of grass at the root and only the grass blades themselves are exposed which increases the structural integrity of the grass and helps with grass growth, bald patches and erosion. The cellular structure also prevents any soil and flowers from being washed away as they stay contained in the pavers. When having a gravel finish the cells ensure the gravel is contained tightly preventing gravel displacement and bare empty patches.

These gravel pavers/grass pavers can withstand constant pedestrian and vehicular traffic of up to 40 tonnes per m2 and are ideal to be used for the following applications:
Our plastic driveway grids are chemically inert, rot resistant and UV/weather resilient so will withstand years of use. They are light, quick and easy to install and will not crack (subject to the 40 tonnes per m2 limit) therefore a great cheap effective way of stabilising ground, encouraging grass growth and making an aesthetically pleasing and easy to manage path, walkway or driveway.

]]>The post How ground reinforcement can help in farms appeared first on Mesh4.
]]>Lameness is currently one of the most important welfare problems faced by dairy cattle today and mud is among one of the causes. The moist environment decreases hoof hardness and increases claw lesions which leads to disease and ulcers. Lameness has the potential to affect the entire herd and as a welfare point the cows will experience pain and discomfort. For farmers they will experience losses due to reduced fertility, lower milk yields and increased likelihood of culling rates.
Our grass protection can help reduce the amount of mud in these areas, therefore reducing the amount of mud the cattle’s hooves come into contact with. Mud mainly accumulates in feeding and drinking areas and gateway access to fields where there is constant traffic from the dairy cattle making the journey to the milking parlour. Our GP FLEX is designed to protect and strengthen grassed areas preventing them from rutting and becoming muddy. Our grass reinforcement also has an anti-slip layer which may help the cattle from slipping and injuring themselves. Mud can also cause the same issues in sheep, foot scald is a common infection which increases in cold and wet conditions where mud and manure accumulates, foot scald can then develop into foot rot – a secondary infection. Again like cows this causes welfare issues for the sheep due to the pain and discomfort they will experience. Due to the infections being highly contagious they can spread quickly, this can cause economic losses to the farms due to decreased weight loss, fertility and mobility and again increased culling rates.
Mesh 4 also supply horse pavers, these pavers have a soft resin material on the base which is gentle on the horses hooves and provides an anti-slip, elasticated surface making them ideal for riding grounds and paddocks. The pavers help to reduce and prevent any formation of mud as they have a high draining capacity which in turn helps with hoof problems caused by moisture which can cause lost shoes and skin infections. Excess muddy areas can also prevent injuries due to slipping and scrambling in deep mud. Falls to horses can be fatal as I know first-hand, two of my horses were playing and chasing each other and one of them unfortunately slipped in a muddy area and during the fall broke its leg, the break was so bad the only treatment was for the horse to be put to sleep.
Farmers are also liable and responsible for cleaning up any mud which falls on any public roads from their vehicles or livestock. Mud can be very hazardous to motorists and can cause a slippery surface which can result in serious and fatal collisions. Using these permeable pavers can prevent the churning up of the ground and grass therefore reducing the amount of mud meaning less mud being deposited onto public roads.
Disclaimer – Although we have produced the most anti slip resistant grass protection available, we cannot account for all the variances in climatic and ground conditions. Please note that until the grass has grown through the mesh and become established our GP FLEX maybe slippery in wet weather and care should be taken during this period. We recommend that for best results when using the GP Flex, that the drainage in the project and surrounding area is sufficient and the ground has a good firmness for best results.
